fruits

If you’re tired of eating nothing but apples and bananas with the occasional handful of berries, you should check out the international section of your produce store. There are a tremendous variety of untapped exotic fruits on the market. Many fill the holes our current fruit selection leaves behind. Some are also great replacements for fruits you need, but don’t like.

Cherimoya

Do you hate citrus? Do you always catch the cold that goes around your office? Try cherimoya. This soft fruit has tons of vitamin C, and it’s nothing like an orange. In fact, it’s so soft fans often refer to it as pudding-like, and it tastes sweet, like peaches or strawberries. This little fruit will also give you twenty percent of your daily B6 intake, along with several other B vitamins and a good dose of potassium.

Buddha’s Hand

This unusual and somewhat alarming fruit is good for not just healthy snacking, but also a zest and a home remedy for pain and respiratory problems. A member of the citron family, this fruit contains coumarin, limonin, and other pain-relieving chemicals. The zest adds a nice, spicy flavor to many dishes. Moreover, the fruit has a long history as part of traditional medicine in India and China.

Canistel

The canistel has an almost gourd-like shape. It looks like a three-dimensional, yellow teardrop. They aren’t very juicy, and they have a very dry texture, similar to a boiled egg. Their flavor, though, is very sweet, and the fruit is used to flavor a variety of desserts in Mexico and Asia. It has a lot of vitamin A and niacin, and it has some vitamin C, calcium, and iron, too.

Cucamelon

These grape-sized fruits may look like a sweet little treat, but they are actually fairly sour. While the majority of our list has focused on sweet fruits you might enjoy for a dessert, healthy eating and healthy snacking is all about variety. Different flavors often reflect different vitamins and minerals. These little fruits are also extremely low in calories and fats. Meanwhile, they’re packed with not only vitamins and minerals, but also fiber and antioxidants.

Feijoas

Although they aren’t as furry, these fruits are similar in size to kiwis. You can also eat the insides with a spoon, seeds and all, which makes them great for portable, healthy snacking. They have a citrus like flavor, though, so if you aren’t a fan of oranges, you might want to try one or two before buying them by the bag. In addition to the great fiber they provide, these little fruits can give you over fifty percent of your daily vitamin C. They contain rarer vitamins like B6, K, and E, as well.
