herbs

If you want to start healthy snacking habits, you’re going to have to address the flavor dilemma. Unfortunately, the food industry has trained our taste buds to appreciate little besides salt and sugar. Even fat by itself isn’t enough to satisfy our cravings. Health food is notoriously bland, but it doesn’t have to be. The secret may be in your house plants.

Why should grow herbs

Herbs and spices are the best way to flavor your food, and with a bit of experimentation, they can replace the bulk of salt and sugar in your food. Herbs taste best when they’re fresh, and while there’s nothing wrong with buying them pre-dried in little bottles from the supermarket, they won’t have the same kick as fresh samples. Buying fresh cut herbs from the store for every meal gets pricey, though. Fortunately, even if you live in an apartment, you can grow your own herbs. Here are some the tastiest and easiest to grow indoors.

Mint

Mint, particularly peppermint, is almost impossible to kill once it sinks its roots into something. This fast-growing herb can and will fill a large pot entirely on its own within a matter of months, if not weeks. It’s great for everything from seasoning meats, to adding flavor to drinks. If you want an herb that can stand up to a bit of neglect, bounce back from abuse, and make a range of foods better, go with the trusty mint.

Basil

This wonderful herb is one of the most versatile you’ll ever meet. Although it’s traditionally part of Italian cooking, it goes very well in a variety of dishes. It’s dramatically tastier when it’s fresh, too, so it’s one of the best to grow in your kitchen. This hardy plant can take a lot of abuse and neglect before it gives up, and it grows rapidly. The more you use it, the better, because the leaves will always have the best flavor before the plant blooms. So long as you pinch off the top of your basil’s stems regularly, it will never bloom, and your basil will stay fresh and flavorful.

Rosemary

If you’re a forgetful plant parent, then rosemary is your ideal herb. It’s an extremely tasty and fragrant little plant, and using fresh rosemary helps prevent getting stabbed in the gums by the dried kind that comes from bottles. What makes it so great for not-so-green thumbs, though? This plant does not do well with a lot of water. By keeping watering to a minimum, or simply forgetting to water it for a few days, you’ll keep your rosemary in peak health.

Trying to grow something may seem terrifying, but growing herbs your kitchen is a lot easier than you think. Health food doesn’t have to be tasteless, and healthy snacking will take on a whole new life when you can season your food with fresh ingredients. Houseplants boost mood, too, and keeping growing, green things in your home will help scrub the air. Even if you don’t have a green thumb, these three herbs will do well in your kitchen.
